CHAPTER TWELVE

KENDRIC

The morning after our little heart-to-heart and the kiss that left me achingly hard and desperate to see her again, I do my best to focus on work, but it’s a lost cause before I even sit at my desk, and I know it. The first few hours that should be spent working are instead spent mulling over ideas and possible solutions to Sloan’s supplier issues. I want to help… in a more desperate way than I could have ever predicted. It’s not just a professional courtesy “we’re all in this together” type thing, not even a neighborly obligation thing. No, this need to see her succeed goes so much deeper than that. I would much rather focus on fixing her problems than examining my need to fix them, so that’s exactly what I do.

As the morning slips into the lunch rush, a solution finally dawns on me and I want to punch myself in the dick for taking so long to think of it.

“Luka! Get in here!” I call, clicking furiously through tabs on my laptop to find the spreadsheet I’m looking for.

“What do you want, Ken? Some of us are actually attempting to get some work done today instead of staring off into the middle distance like a fuckin' wanker,” Luka chides as he settles into one of the club chairs across from my desk. “You? Run scenarios? Who are you and what have you done with my business illiterate partner?” Luka asks, a hint of a chuckle in his tone.

“Shut up. I am not business illiterate. You’re just better at this shit than I am. You do remember this whole place was my idea originally, right?”

“Eh, semantics. But regardless of who runs things and who merely got drunk one night and had a random idea…” I can’t hold back the eye roll in response to his jab, but he continues without noticing. “What scenarios are you running? And why didn’t you just bring them to me?”

The million dollar question, and one that I honestly should have a better answer to outside of I just wanted to. Knowing that I will need him on board for this plan regardless of what the spreadsheets show, I sit back in my chair and fill Luka in on my idea. I can tell the moment it all clicks together in his mind, the numbers lining up and falling into place in that way I will never understand, but it just comes naturally to him.

“It will take some doing, and we will want to light a fire under Mack’s ass to ramp up the hiring process… but I think it’s doable. Think
