CHAPTER TWELVE
KENDRIC
The morning after our little heart-to-heart and the kiss that left me achingly hard and desperate to see her again, I do my best to focus on work, but itâs a lost cause before I even sit at my desk, and I know it. The first few hours that should be spent working are instead spent mulling over ideas and possible solutions to Sloanâs supplier issues. I want to help⦠in a more desperate way than I could have ever predicted. Itâs not just a professional courtesy âweâre all in this togetherâ type thing, not even a neighborly obligation thing. No, this need to see her succeed goes so much deeper than that. I would much rather focus on fixing her problems than examining my need to fix them, so thatâs exactly what I do.
As the morning slips into the lunch rush, a solution finally dawns on me and I want to punch myself in the dick for taking so long to think of it.
âLuka! Get in here!â I call, clicking furiously through tabs on my laptop to find the spreadsheet Iâm looking for.
âWhat do you want, Ken? Some of us are actually attempting to get some work done today instead of staring off into the middle distance like a fuckin' wanker,â Luka chides as he settles into one of the club chairs across from my desk. I ignore his comment, knowing if he was annoyed or thought I wasnât getting my work done, he would approach that discussion differently.
âWhere is the vendor list for this year? And the expense tracking? I need to run a few scenarios,â I ask, only half listening for his answer as I dig through yet another file on our shared drive.
âYou? Run scenarios? Who are you and what have you done with my business illiterate partner?â Luka asks, a hint of a chuckle in his tone.
âShut up. I am not business illiterate. Youâre just better at this shit than I am. You do remember this whole place was my idea originally, right?â
âEh, semantics. But regardless of who runs things and who merely got drunk one night and had a random ideaâ¦â I canât hold back the eye roll in response to his jab, but he continues without noticing. âWhat scenarios are you running? And why didnât you just bring them to me?â
The million dollar question, and one that I honestly should have a better answer to outside of I just wanted to. Knowing that I will need him on board for this plan regardless of what the spreadsheets show, I sit back in my chair and fill Luka in on my idea. I can tell the moment it all clicks together in his mind, the numbers lining up and falling into place in that way I will never understand, but it just comes naturally to him.
âIt will take some doing, and we will want to light a fire under Mackâs ass to ramp up the hiring process⦠but I think itâs doable. Think
